Leadership guidance for clinicians and healthcare professionals

Empowering clinicians to create a culture of collaboration, care, and trust.

Leading a clinical practice or team requires more than clinical expertise. Leadership coaching helps clinicians, therapists, psychologists, and healthcare professionals strengthen communication, navigate difficult conversations, and create healthier workplace environments.

At a glance

Happy Teams is a leadership coaching and team development firm for clinicians who own growing practices: therapists, psychologists, chiropractors, and optometrists. Founder Catrina Ballard, M.S.Ed., brings 20+ years in team dynamics to the people side of growth: hiring, accountability, and culture. At The Brooke Center, her coaching helped the practice grow from 1 to 4 clinicians in 16 months and hit its two-year goal a year early.

01 Case study · The Brooke Center

A clear vision, built the right way from the start.

Mallory Oxendine is a therapist and the founder of The Brooke Center. She knew exactly what kind of practice she wanted to build. She brought in Happy Teams to help her build it well, and to become the leader it needed.

The vision

A practice run on authentic connection, relational engagement, and restorative growth. Clinicians who could build a real career instead of burning out. Room for an actual life, hers and her team's.

The challenge

Mallory is a gifted clinician, but running a business was new territory. Interviewing, contracts, leading a team: "Is this normal? I don't know what I'm doing." She didn't want to learn it the hard way.

The work

A full company assessment gave her values structure and language, and answered questions she'd never stopped to ask. In her words, it "made me excited again." Then came the real work: growing into the leader her vision needed.

What changed

She stepped into the owner's chair.

  • Leading with clarity. Owning the calls her vision required instead of outsourcing them.
  • Values over shortcuts. When a tight month tempted a bigger cut, she held the line: "I want you to be able to thrive here."
  • Standards, not expectations. A clear bar her team feels safe inside.
  • Growing quarter by quarter. Sustainable change, so no one drowns in it.
  • Protecting her capacity. Supporting her team without carrying what isn't hers.
The strategy

Built to grow wide, not deep.

Instead of a few clinicians each carrying forty clients a week, Mallory chose a bigger team with lighter, sustainable loads, down to being able to take maternity leave without panicking about money. Her reputation grew with it: a clinician she'd met only once kept her card for two years, then came looking for her when she was ready to make a move.

"An associate keeps falling behind on notes, and I don't want to sound like a boss I'd never work for."

04 Questions practice owners ask

Leading a growing practice, answered.

Do you need to be a clinician to coach clinicians?

Not to coach the team side of a practice, but it helps to understand clinical work. Catrina's graduate degree is LPC-eligible, and she brings 20+ years of coaching and leading team dynamics, including with clinician-owned practices. She works alongside owners on hiring, accountability, and culture while they lead the clinical work.

How do I build accountability in my practice without micromanaging?

Start with clear expectations and regular, short check-ins, then let clinicians own the outcome. Happy Teams helps owners set those standards, practice the conversations that go with them, and stop carrying every decision themselves.

How do I move from clinician to CEO of my practice?

By deciding what only you should do and handing off the rest with clear ownership. Coaching focuses on your leadership habits, your team's roles, and the conversations that let you step back without things slipping.

How do I keep clinicians from burning out as we grow?

Burnout in a growing practice usually comes from unclear roles, uneven workloads, and conversations no one is having. Happy Teams looks at how the team actually works, then builds habits of trust and honest feedback so people stay.

What results have practices seen?

At The Brooke Center, the practice grew from 1 to 4 clinicians in 16 months, with a fifth on the way. It reached a pace of about $23,000 a month and hit its two-year goal a year early.

How much does it cost?

One-on-one leadership coaching for practice owners is $2,100. A free fit call is the best place to start, so you know it's the right fit before you invest.

Do you work in person or virtually?

Both. One-on-one coaching and fit calls are virtual, so Happy Teams works with practices anywhere in the U.S. Team workshops and speaking can be in person, in the Houston area and by arrangement elsewhere.
